Where most consulting trails break: the “question jump” problem

- You ask about current process maturity.
- Immediately you ask about root cause.

Branching is often treated as a delivery feature (“show the right questions”). But in practice, branching is sequencing control.
Use branching to:
- skip irrelevant depth (reducing fatigue),
- increase precision (asking the right follow-up only when needed),
- avoid contradictions (if the client indicates a constraint, don’t later contradict it).
The rule of thumb: branch when the next question depends on a meaning, not merely a topic.
A practical checklist for sequencing quality
Before you ship an assessment trail, run this checklist:
- Does each question logically depend on the previous one?
- Are definitions established early (so later answers use the same language)?
- Is there enough context before metrics or recommendations?
- Are you progressively narrowing scope instead of switching topics abruptly?
- Do transitions reduce cognitive load (short bridge questions where needed)?
- Are branches triggered by meaning (constraints, priorities, chosen direction)?
- Can you explain the order to another consultant without reading every question?
If you can’t, the sequence may still work for one client but will degrade in the general case.
